SMERT- THE NEED OF HOUR

“Training proves to be the key ingredient to handling any emergency.”
On the occasion of World Health Day, D.A.V. Public School, Sector-49, Gurugram, in association with Medanta- the Medicity, Gurugram, took the initiative to organise a symposium and training session for SMERT- School Medical Emergency Response Team on 6 April 2018. The programme was organised to create awareness and establish procedures for the administration of emergency first aid services in the schools. The session was attended by the teams of various schools in Gurugram that comprised of two students, one teacher and one medical representative. They were sensitised to create SMERTS in their schools to deal the medical emergencies.
The chief guest of the programme Dr. Shashi, Deputy CMO of Gurugram congratulated the school to be the pioneer of this much needed project. The guest speakers of the programme gave an insight of the working of SMERT and dealing with medical emergencies in school. Dr. Atmaram Bansal, a specialist in Epilepsy and senior consultant spoke about the precautions and preventive measures of Epilepsy and seizures. Dr. Devender Richhariya, the associate director, emergency Trauma unit at Medanta told about first aid procedures and ways to handle them. Dr. Meenakshi Misri the inhouse Health Officer of the school initiated the symposium on forming and implementing SMERT.
The participants also got hands-on training on CPR and AED handling by the trainers (trained by AHA- American Heart Association). The school Principal Mrs. Charu Maini motivated the students to be the active ambassadors of SMERT and use this life skill to save lives. It was indeed an informative session through which the participants learnt how to be instrumental in providing much needed first aid in emergencies and handle these cases with expertise.
