Outreach Programme on the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsis in Rwanda

A commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsis in Rwanda was organized by the UN Information Centre, on 10 April 2024 at India International Centre, New Delhi. Representatives from the UN, and dignitaries from the High Commission of Rwanda came together to pay homage to more than one million lives lost. More than 250 students and faculty from 25 schools of Delhi-NCR attended the event. Students of various schools exhibited posters and shared their perspective on the genocide. Thereafter, Mr. Darrin Farrant, Director, UN Information Centre read out the message of the UN Secretary-General. Students from DAV Public School, Uppal's Southend, Sector 49 Gurugram took part in the poster presentation and performed a meaningful skit to highlight the horrors of the Genocide and to spread awareness. The event was also marked by a choir song. The students explored efforts towards preventing future genocides, promoting reconciliation, and rebuilding communities affected by the genocide. The event was a platform to encourage values of tolerance, empathy, and understanding among the students.

Ambassador Jacqueline Mukangira addressed the students. She highlighted that the central message of Rwanda with regard to genocide and hate propaganda is that the world should draw lessons from the 1994 genocide against the Tutsis and renew its vow to establish peace and harmony in the world. Overall it was a wholesome and enriching experience for one and all present.
